Rain on your wedding day?

As a wedding photographer, I’ve learned one thing for certain: rain on your wedding day isn’t a disaster—it’s just a different kind of magic.

The key is preparation. If there’s even a chance of rain in the forecast, plan ahead with a few simple details. Clear or neutral-toned umbrellas photograph beautifully and keep everyone dry without distracting from your look. Consider backup locations for portraits—covered porches, elegant indoor spaces, or even a tent can create stunning, intimate images.

Your timeline is one of the most powerful tools you have when it comes to navigating unpredictable weather. If rain is expected later in the day, consider shuffling things around to take advantage of dry windows earlier on. Adding a first look can be a game-changer—it allows you to capture many of your key portraits ahead of the ceremony, giving you flexibility and peace of mind if the weather shifts. Even small adjustments, like moving family photos earlier or building in buffer time, can make a huge difference.

Footwear matters more than you think. Swapping into a pair of chic boots or comfortable flats can save you from stress or feeling uncomfortable with your heels sinking in the wet grass. Save your pretty heels for any indoor to dry portions of the day to keep them clean and dry.

Most importantly, embrace it. Some of the most romantic, emotional photos happen in the rain—the soft light, the quiet atmosphere, the way couples naturally lean into each other. When you let go of perfect weather expectations, you open the door to something even more memorable.

Rain doesn’t ruin a wedding day—it makes it uniquely yours.
